How Does Reality TV Impact A Chef's Professional Life?

Amidst the various food- and drink-heavy events at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, there were also opportunities for thoughtful discussions about the food industry. One of these events delved into the hot issue of reality TV, and how winning a food show can affect a chef's professional career and reputation. Moderated by Bobby Flay, the panel included chefs Richard Blais ("Top Chef All-Stars" winner), Marc Forgione ("Next Iron Chef" winner), Jonathan Waxman ("Top Chef Masters" participant), Stephanie Izard ("Top Chef" winner), Geoffrey Zakarian ("Next Iron Chef" winner) and Michael Symon ("Iron Chef").

Flay admitted that he had never moderated a panel before because he was always a panelist. He dove right into it though, and announced, "I don't want this to be a lovefest on what everyone's new projects are." Looks like he's fit for the job, as he sparked a lot of candid discussion.

On growing one's empire:

When Flay asked Michael Symon about Symon's decision to relocate to New York from Cleveland to appear on "The Chew," Symon explained that the program was a once in a lifetime opportunity. He would have never moved to New York without his wife, but she agreed to come with him. Symon said that the hardest part of being a chef is to delegate work. Over the years, as he has continued to open restaurants, Symon has grown comfortable with the team he has put in place. He hasn't worked the line in 13 years, but still remains involved in his restaurants. "The greatest chefs are the greatest teachers," he mused.

Marc Forgione is in the process of opening his second restaurant, and admitted that he has no idea how to run a restaurant without physically being there. "The hardest restaurant you open is your second," explained Symon. At that stage, chefs don't quite have all the cogs in place to keep expanding, and it's impossible for chefs to be in two places at once.

On sponsorships:

Since appearing on "Next Iron Chef," Marc Forgione has inked deals with POM Wonderful and Macy's. Before going on television, he never would have imagined that a company would give him money to drink its product.

Flay advised that when it come to sponsorship, it was really important to know when to say "no." Symon echoed Flay's sentiment. "Be true to yourself."

Waxman cited Wolfgang Puck as an example of a chef that learned how to make a lot of money. "I'm incredibly in awe of Wolfgang Puck," he said.

On future TV plans:

Stephanie Izard has been approached by many production companies to do more TV, but she has been hesitant about filming inside her restaurant. "I'm not going to yell at my dishwasher to make a good episode," she explained.

On TV's effect:

Since going on TV, business at Waxman's restaurant increased 35 percent. Forgione noticed a bump as well but it only goes so far. "TV will make you come once," he said, "but the restaurant will make them come back."

There can be too much of a good thing -- although all the chefs appreciate hearing that a customer loved a dish, sometimes fandom, especially of the TV variety, can go one step too far. Both Waxman and Forgione have had fans chat them up at urinals.

Watch the discussion in full here.

The Contemporary View on Home and Family

You are at : Home | Family Concerns ??? By : Lauren B. ?? zero times read
Submitted 2012-02-24 23:20:01 Home and family involve two concepts that are inseparable in all respects. Although at first glance home and family seem to refer to the physical structure and subjects such as the house for home and the family members for family, these concepts are really in the realm of idea that bind related people together sharing common identity, lineage, experience, and life.

Home refers not only to the structure that provide for shelter. It is primarily the feeling of belongingness, the sharing of affection and care for each other within a certain place or location. Such location is considered a home, whether it is a house, shanty, mansion, or palace, as long as the members feel the love and belongingness with each other and they are able to freely express their real selves and identity, then it is no less than a home for them. On the other hand, the idea of a family is more than the togetherness of persons who share the same bloodline and ancestors. It transcends the mere presence of a mother, father and children.

Family refers to the social and emotional bond that connects individuals, whether related in blood or not, and they share the same love, care, and affection with each other. Although at this point home and family both refers to the emotional, psychological, and social bonds that connects the individuals forming home and family, these concepts are distinguished in this wise; the family always refer to the subjects of the house or the persons that dwell in it while the home generally refers to the structure or residence or it may also connote the emotional and psychological experience of a person to feel the belongingness, togetherness, commonality, love, and affection while being with such people or inside such house.

The divide between this actual or tangible side of home and family from the idea or conceptual realm of the said concepts is manifest among many families nowadays. Most members of the modern families experience the extreme absence of filial or parental care and affection. This is due to the complicated lifestyle that values more on the material aspects and performs most of human activities in a mechanical way.

To illustrate, parents who are into business traveling seem not to worry about being miles away from their children since there is the advancement of communication technology that offers virtual and real time presence such as video chatting on the web and even on mobile phones. However, this development does not suffice the need for the real and actual presence of parents to express their care and affection to their growing children.

Thus, despite all of these technologies, most children do not feel at home while they are in their mansions and they do not feel the presence of their family even when their parents are with them physically. The home and family are concepts that have various ways and means for actualization. They cannot be left to mere physicality or to some abstract ideas, lest, these concepts are nothing but mere thoughts with the least value and significance for the human species.

Finance And Business | Wedding Insurance Budgeting, And How ...

As we continue to enjoy the turmoil generated by the economic downturn, wedding insurance has increasingly become one of those aspects which people have chosen to ignore in order to try to keep the overall cost of the wedding to a minimum.

Planning a wedding is very rarely cheap, and so often couples will be making a number of tough decisions as far as what to buy, what to pay for, and what they can get away with not having. There are some optional extras which have increasingly fallen by the wayside.

Traditionally many couples have purchased bottles of wine and liberally spread them around the tables for the reception, but many couples are cutting back on such generous frivolities, letting their friends and family by their own drinks instead. Having a lavishly tiered wedding cake can certainly look good for the photographs, but having two out of the three tiers made of cardboard is another way in which couples are helping their budget to stretch further.

These and many other examples are certainly viable ways in which couples can help their wedding budget stretch as far as they need it to in order to have a truly memorable and magical day. But choosing to cut out wedding insurance is not cutting out an optional extra.

Granted, as you walk up the aisle, stand up to give a speech, pose for photographs, or tuck into your wedding meal, nobody is going to stand and admire your wedding insurance policy. Nobody will compliment you on your choice of insurance company, there will be no photographs of your policy document, and after the event nobody will be reminiscing happily about the wording of paragraph 3 subsection 2.

But this doesn't in any way mean that a wedding insurance policy should be considered an extra. It is precisely because of the fact that we are still experiencing an economic downturn that it is more critical than ever to make sure you have the cover you need.

Only very recently a major wedding company called Confetti went bust, much to the surprise of many of those within the industry who had seen that company as an established and trusted brand. There is no such thing these days as a completely future proof and reliable service provider, and failing to take out suitable wedding insurance will place you in a very precarious position.

Without suitable cover you will be entirely and completely at the mercy of a dozen or more service suppliers, most of whom you won't have previously had anything to do with, and so won't have any firsthand experience of, and certainly will have no control over.

If they run into financial difficulties, you will have nowhere to turn. You may think that you will at least get your deposit back, or a refund on any money already paid, but it is worth remembering that if a supplier goes bankrupt then you may well be at the very bottom of the list of creditors, and may well receive absolutely nothing. Wedding insurance doesn't have to cost much, but not taking out wedding insurance may very well cost a good deal more.

How to Choose A Trustee - Estate Planning Attorney in Reno, NV

Feb 24, 2012 ?/? By: Bradley B. Anderson, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: probate, Wills and Trusts

When you create a trust, one of the most important decisions you must make is who to appoint to succeed you as your?trustee. Although each trust is unique, there are some basic considerations that you may wish to take into account before making a decision regarding the appointment of a trustee.

  • The Purpose and Complexity of The Trust: Trusts come in numerous forms and are created for a wide variety of reasons. A trust may be rather simple, such as a trust that is created solely for the purpose of providing funds to care for a pet after the death of the maker of the trust. On the other hand, a trust may be extremely complex, such as a trust created to manage and distribute a large estate after the death of the maker. A trust with a simple purpose does not require as much from the trustee as a complex trust does.
  • Location of Trust Assets: The trustee is responsible for all trust assets for the lifetime of the trust. Where the trust assets are located is an important consideration. It is sometimes helpful if the trustee is located near the assets in order to more effectively manage the assets. With today?s?electronic communications, however, this is not as great a factor.
  • Relationship of the Trustee to the Beneficiaries: Does the potential trustee have any financial interest in the trust itself or a direct relationship to the financial interest of a beneficiary? Does the potential trustee have an obvious or potential conflict of interest with any of the beneficiaries? If so, you may wish to reconsider selecting this potential trustee.
  • Financial Ability and Experience: The trustee has numerous duties to both the assets of the trust itself and the beneficiaries. Depending on the size of the trust, managing the trust assets may require a high level of financial ability and experience. Be certain the person you appoint has the experience and the ability to handle the position or to manage the experts who will take care of the technical matters.

PFT: Molk aims to break combine bench record

1987 NFC Divisional Playoff Game - Washington Redskins vs Chicago Bears - January 10, 1988Getty Images

The various concussion-related lawsuits filed in recent months have suddenly taken on a far more serious tone.? According to NBC Chicago, Dave Duerson?s estate has filed a wrongful death action against the NFL.

Duerson committed suicide on February 17, 2011.? The lawsuit claims that, ?[i]f the NFL would have taken the necessary steps to oversee and protect Dave Duerson by warning him of the dangers of head traumas . . . then [he] would not have suffered dangerous repetitive head trauma, would have recovered more rapidly, and would not have sustained permanent damage to his brain which contributed to his death.?

This allegation presumes that the NFL knew or should have known about the dangers of head traumas during Duerson?s career, and that he would have chosen not to play if that information had been shared with him.

?CTE has been a known entity to the NFL for years,? said William Gibbs, who represents the Duerson estate.? ?This degenerative brain disease causes various symptoms ranging from cognitive decline to dementia.?? The NFL?s blatant disregard of the significance of this crisis amongst its retirees is baffling.?

?We have not seen the lawsuit and therefore our attorneys have not had an opportunity to review it,? the league said in a statement forwarded to PFT.? ?Dave Duerson was an outstanding football player and
citizen who made so many positive contributions but unfortunately encountered serious personal challenges later in his life. We sympathize with the Duerson family and continue to be saddened by this tragedy.?

Hundreds of former players have filed suit against the league, claiming that the NFL knew about the long-term dangers of concussions and failed to disclose those risks to players.? The NFL has argued that relief should be pursued through the collective bargaining process, given that players have been represented by a union, the NFL Players Association.

Duerson played from 1983 through 1993, with the Bears, Giants, and Cardinals, winning a pair of Super Bowl rings.? He was one of the named plaintiffs in the Reggie White antitrust lawsuit, and he was a member of the NFLPA Executive Committee.

Last year, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said that Duerson?s death has ?shaken me personally.?? The NFLPA hasn?t said anything about the various and growing concussion lawsuits.? In response to Duerson?s lawsuit, spokesman George Atallah told PFT that the NFLPA has no comment.

Given Duerson?s past role in the NFLPA, one thing to watch going forward is whether the NFLPA will take an affirmative position on the merit of the allegations that the NFL knew about the risks of head injuries and failed to take appropriate action.

How to Stop Being Judgmental, Overcritical or ... - Personal Growth

Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover - How to Stop Being Judgmental

You have no right to prejudge or make judgments too quickly and critically about someone. Even though it is common for people to judge others, it is unfair to form an opinion based on limited information and faulty perceptions or beliefs.

Why should you make a judgment about someone especially if you don't know her motives, what's going on inside her head and how she perceives things and people?

It's true that there are people out there who make you feel annoyed and uncomfortable. But in actual fact, it is your response towards them that make you feel that way. Your beliefs about something or certain people lead you to think the way you do because you relate them to your own experiences, beliefs and mental conditioning.

How to Stop Being Judgmental No. 1 - Assess Your Thoughts

The way you feel or think of someone is a reflection of your own thoughts and feelings? When you see something, you start to form internal dialogs followed by pictures or images and then associate some kind of emotions to them. What you experience on the outside are actually the expressions of your internal focus.

How to Avoid Being Judgmental No. 2 - Pause and Think before You Prejudge

  1. Why do you feel and experience such emotions or thoughts about a particular person?
  2. How would someone identify, judge or assess you based on your behavior, character and attitude? Would you like the way they judge you?
  3. What do you gain by prejudging people?
  4. What if you could change your thinking and views about the person? How would you see her or him now?

How to Stop Being Judgmental No. 3 - There is a Positive Intent

No amount of logic can change a person as long as her internal perceived reality is not changed. Instead of being judgmental, why not understand that there is positive intent in every behavior. Everyone's conduct has its own purpose that conveys some kind of beliefs and experiences, mostly acted out of conscious awareness.

How to Stop Being Judgmental No. 4 - Look for the Good

There are good and bad, beauty and ugliness. You are free to judge and perceive a person, behavior or response any way you like. But if you look out for the good in people, you will inevitably notice them. Learn to accept people for what they are. Instead of making evaluations, give warmth and understanding. Find something to love in that person.

How to Stop Being Judgmental No. 5 - Keep an Open Mind

Keep an open mind. Get curious and question your assumptions and evaluations. See things and observe people in new ways. Watch what's happening and how people are behaving. Look for something that you can learn. If you take the time to observe, you will find that everyone has something to teach. What is it about someone's behavior or attitude that reflects who you really are?

How to Stop Being Judgmental No. 6 - Delay Your Emotions

How do you do that? Change your focus, those dialogs and images playing in your mind. When you shift your attention, you are also altering your emotions and not giving in to them. Doing this will enable you to delay your judgment. Of course you can also just walk away and eliminate them altogether and come back to rethink, especially if your temperaments are getting in the way.

How to Stop Being Judgmental No. 7 - Get This - It Is You

People are not the problem. It is your response to how a person dressed, talked, and behaved that brought you to your conclusion. It mirrors some parts of you that you are rejecting or disliking. It has something to do with you comparing yourself to this person, your expectations and how you feel.

You attract the kind of people into your life in harmony with your thoughts and emotions. So to attract the people and situation that you would like to exist in your life, start to make the change within you.

Cloud Music Sniper brings your Google Music library to any music player

Android Central

There is absolutely no doubt that Google Music is a fantastic service to have, if slightly limiting at times. The music stored in your cloud locker is only ever available to the official Google Music app which is frustrating for some. Oh for a world where Poweramp or Winamp could access all that music. Well that world is now, and Cloud Music Sniper can bring your music to your chosen music app.

The previous incarnation was known as Google Music Sniper, but was suspended due to its name. The new version requires no root, and works by 'sniping' your offline synced music content and storing it in a new directory. This directory is then available to your alternative music player. The music is actually available to be taken off your device and used on your desktop computer. To the user it is as simple as firing up the app and following some on screen instructions.

Cloud Music Sniper is still in the early stages, and the developers are known for constantly updating their apps, so there should be plenty more to come. If this sounds like something for you, it'll run you for $1.99/£1.26 in the Android Market. Download links can be found after the break.

Pope Appoints 22 New Cardinals | FOX8.com ? Cleveland news ...

ROME (CNN) ? Pope Benedict appointed 22 new cardinals at the Vatican on Saturday, with his choices for the lofty role likely to influence who will be appointed as the next pontiff.

The Vatican named the new cardinals last month, but they were officially inducted by the pontiff in a special ceremony at St. Peter?s Basilica.

Among those to be elevated to the College of Cardinals are New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, cementing his standing as the top Catholic in the United States, and Archbishop Edwin F. O?Brien of Baltimore.

Others include Archbishop Thomas Collins, from Toronto, as well as the Bishop of Hong Kong, John Tong Hon, and Major Archbishop George Alencherry from India

Senior clerics from Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Romania and Brazil are also represented, as well as several from Italy.

The College of Cardinals was established in 1150. Its main role is to advise the current Pope and pick his successor.

?This is the most exclusive club in the Catholic Church,? said John Allen, CNN?s Vatican analyst. ?In many cases, you also become, at least informally, a candidate to be the next pope, because the next pope will almost certainly come from the roughly 120 cardinals under the age of 80.?

Once a cardinal reaches 80, he is no longer able to participate in the election of the pope or enter the secret conclave where cardinals gather when the time comes to select the next pope, typically upon the prior pope?s death.

The new cardinals each professed their faith and swore an oath of obedience to Pope Benedict and his successors during Saturday?s ceremony, called the Consistory, at the Vatican.

They then walked one by one to the pontiff and knelt in front of him to receive the traditional red hat, or ?biretta,? and gold ring, and a document with the name of the cardinal?s titular church in Rome.

In his address, Benedict said that in joining the College of Cardinals, the clerics would ?be united with new and stronger bonds not only to the Roman Pontiff but also to the entire community of the faithful spread throughout the world.?

Emphasizing the importance of service over self-interest, the pontiff said the red of the cardinals? hats was symbolic of the ultimate sacrifice they would make if required.

?The new cardinals are entrusted with the service of love: love for God, love for his Church, an absolute and unconditional love for his brothers and sisters, even unto shedding their blood, if necessary, as expressed in the words of placing the biretta and as indicated by the color of their robes,? he said.

Pope Benedict also announced seven new saints, including the first Native American saint, a 17th-Century Mohawk woman called Kateri, or Catherine, Tekakwitha, who was a Catholic convert.

Existing members of the College of Cardinals and the new cardinals-elect came together for a day of prayer and reflection Friday, in preparation for the ceremony, according to the Holy See Press Office.

Dolan addressed the gathering on the subject of evangelization, saying there was a need to challenge a growing secularization of society.

PUBLISHING MY MEMOIR, PART 1

By Pesi Dinnerstein, author of A Cluttered Life: Searching for God, Serenity, and My Missing Keys

For the first forty years of my life, all I wanted to do with my unmanageable clutter was get rid of it?or, at the very least, make it a bit more manageable. Writing about it was not something I ever considered?maybe because I was too overwhelmed, maybe because it didn?t seem worth writing about, or maybe because I was simply too scared to discover what might be hidden beneath all those piles.

How I got from there to Chapter One is a story unto itself, but not the story for today. What I want to share in this post is the unlikely tale of how I found an agent and a publisher and actually managed to pull together a book.

storytelling-memoir, memoir writingThis part of the journey begins in January of 2008. At that point, I had already been talking for years about wanting to write a book in which I could explore my complicated relationship with clutter. I wasn?t quite sure what form I wanted this exploration to take, but I was leaning toward a collection of essays. I liked the idea of viewing the topic from many different angles without having to delve too deeply into any particular one or reveal more than I wanted to about my own struggle. A novel felt too disconnected, but a memoir definitely felt too close for comfort. A book of essays felt just right?personal and honest, but shared from a safe distance.

The only problem?as you would expect?is that my life was very cluttered, and I never found the time to write. In 2004, my husband and I decided to leave our jobs in New York and move to Florida, where I hoped to sip lemonade under a palm tree and reinvent myself as a writer. Unfortunately, it didn?t quite work out that way.

My husband developed all sorts of health issues, my elderly mother became more elderly and in need of increased care, and we walked into the worst hurricane season South Florida had seen in thirty years. Just as we were getting unpacked and ready to begin our new tropical lives, Hurricane Wilma came along and blew off part of our roof. Our condo was flooded over and over again for many months and had to be virtually rebuilt. By the time our life was restored to some degree of normalcy, it was already 2007, and the only thing I had written was a series of checks to our contractor.

storytelling, memoir, memoir writing, Pesi Dinnerstein, memoir authorAnxious to finally move forward, I decided that the first step toward writing a book was buying a computer. I had never owned one nor had the slightest desire to do so, but I now saw the purchase as a statement of serious intent.

At this point, my dear friend Yitta Halberstam decided to step in. Since I was no longer underwater and now had a functioning computer, she felt that the time had come to start taking the writing of my book more seriously. Yitta, of course, would have been the one to know, since she herself was a successful writer.

I?ll never forget her phone call.

?Pesi, I told my agent about your idea for a book, and she?s very interested and wants to know more about it. Could you send her a few pages describing what you plan to do??

?What did you say, Yitta?? I replied, in shock. ?Your agent is . . . very interested . . . in my idea for a book?!?

I was too overwhelmed to continue the conversation.

I had never sent anything to an agent before. This was my first attempt?and it wasn?t even my attempt; it was Yitta?s. And now the agent wanted to see more?I couldn?t believe it.

But, then, the reality began to set in. How could I do this? I wasn?t ready to write a book. I wasn?t even ready to write a few pages about writing a book. What had I been thinking all along? I had no real plan in mind and no clear sense of what I wanted to say.

However, I certainly wasn?t about to let fear and anxiety?no matter how well founded?get in the way of an opportunity like this. So, I quickly pulled myself together and tried to do the best I could under the circumstances, relying mainly on my own intuition and Yitta?s knowhow to get me through.

A few days after I sent in the description, Yitta?s agent contacted me; and by the end of the week, I had signed an agreement with Jane Dystel of Dystel and Goderich Literary Management. I may not have had a book or even a plan?but I now had an agent!

Then, of course, the real work began. Jane thought the book would sell more easily as a memoir, so I tried to get over my discomfort at sharing the intimate details of my life with total strangers and agreed to change the genre. Once that was settled, I needed to write a formal Book Proposal for Jane to send out to the publishing world.

This was where I really began to lose my footing. As grateful as I was for the opportunity that had come my way, I wasn?t quite prepared for an all-consuming project to take over my life. I had barely recovered from Hurricane Wilma, and, now, it looked like I would have to devote every waking moment to preparing a Book Proposal, which called for an overview of the book, a marketing plan, an analysis of the competition, a detailed summary of the story line, and a long sample chapter?all on a computer that didn?t seem eager to cooperate. And when was I ever going to get to my lemonade and my palm tree?

It was at this moment, however, that I was reminded of the fact that publishing a book?like everything else in our lives?is the product of many forces that we don?t quite understand. And, so, as I began to panic at the prospect of having to do marketing research on my new and bewildering computer, the Universe apparently took notice of my plight and dispatched a Technical Specialist (call her an Angel, if you like) to come by and save the day.

I hadn?t heard from Heather Burns in over twenty years, but she had received her own little prompt from the Universe a few days earlier and decided to track me down. As it turned out, over these past two decades, Heather had become quite an expert in computer research, and she was now only too happy to hold my hand and walk me through the entire process.

There was, of course, a long road ahead. Most writers have a Book Proposal ready to go before they contact an agent. Not only was I trying to write one while my agent was sitting and waiting, but I was also trying to envision a memoir in my mind where, for years, there had only been a pile of essays.

By the time I finished the Proposal, revised it several times, and updated it to include the changes in the book market that occurred while I was busy writing, the season had changed from winter to summer. Not that I would have noticed, since I spent the entire six months working indoors on the desktop computer I had purchased because I couldn?t imagine why I needed a laptop.

On June 11, Jane sent me the final copy for one last look-over and along with a request for few minor changes. She told me not to be concerned if I didn?t hear from her for a month or two because she would be sending out the Proposal and waiting for responses. I emailed the Proposal back to her immediately on June 13 and began waiting patiently for what I hoped would be good news. June passed, July passed, and we were well into August before I received a rather strange note from Jane. She wanted to know when I was planning to send the manuscript.

storytelling, memoir, memoir writing, Pesi Dinnerstein, memoir author? What do you mean?? I asked, totally confused ?I emailed it to you on June 13. I know it went out because it appeared in the ?Sent? column on my email screen.?

?Well,? Jane said, ?it must have gotten lost somewhere in cyberspace because it never arrived here.?

I had heard of such things happening?but to my very first manuscript at the most critical point in the process?! It just didn?t seem fair. But?as I quickly reminded myself?what do we really know? Maybe, in some mysterious way, it would all turn out for the best.

Meanwhile, Jane decided to wait until after Labor Day to send out the Proposal, since she didn?t want it to arrive while people were still on vacation. So, by the time things actually got moving, we were well into September and right on the heels of the stock market crash that sent our economy into the worst recession most of us can remember.

Needless to say, this did not bode well for a first-time author with a weak marketing plan and no platform. And, as expected, the rejections began to trickle in at a steady pace. I tried not to think about what might have been if the Proposal had gone out when it was supposed to, months before publishers became too concerned with their own survival to gamble on an unknown writer. But, of course, I would never really know.

Which brings me to the subject of miracles. You may view what happened next as an interesting coincidence or a random bit of good fortune or just par for the course in the unpredictable world of publishing. But, to me, it was nothing less than a little miracle.

All I knew was that everything felt blocked, and I had no idea how to break through. It wasn?t just that we couldn?t find a publisher; I had a distinct feeling inside me that something was standing in the way. So, I decided to do the four things that usually help me to feel less stuck: I prayed, I meditated, I gave money to charity, and I tried to think of anyone to whom I needed to make amends. Since I couldn?t think of anyone, I concentrated on the first three.

The very next day, however, an old friend called to say that something had come up in therapy that she wanted to discuss with me. It was an incident which had occurred over thirty years ago, but that was still apparently disturbing her. And she realized that it had, in fact, been disturbing her and affecting our friendship for all these years. As soon as we began speaking, I could see that I had clearly been at fault, so I immediately and very sincerely apologized and spent a long time discussing the issue with her. When we were finally done, it felt like something had broken free at last.

Several days later, on October 30, Jane emailed me that we had gotten our first nibble. Seal Press, a division of Perseus Books, wanted to know more about A Cluttered Life. It was only a maybe?and not even a particularly strong maybe?but it was definitely an opening. Over the next few months, they wanted more information, more chapters, more detail?and I did my best to keep it coming as quickly as possible. By January, they decided they were ready to move forward; and by April, the contract was in my mailbox.

I certainly worked very hard to make it happen, and so did Jane; but could we have done it without Yitta and Heather and my friend who forgave me? And would it have happened if the manuscript had gone out in June instead of September? Hard work, good friends, little miracles, serendipity . . . Who knows why anything happens? All I know is that a year after an agent walked into my life, I had a contract in my hand and an overflow of joy and gratitude in my heart.
