(AP) ? Family and friends of a 4-year-old boy who was missing for a week awaited word Friday on what led investigators to return to his home on a mid-Michigan Indian reservation, where his family said the child's body was found under a porch.

Hundreds of people gathered Thursday night at a vigil for Carnel Chamberlain at the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe's reservation in Isabella County where he had lived with his mother and her boyfriend.

"Nothing this monumentally horrific has ever happened in our community," said family spokesman Kevin Chamberlain, who grew up on the reservation and served as tribal chief from 1997 to 1999.

"Right now, it's a very somber place with a lot of broken hearts," Chamberlain told The Associated Press on Friday.

Carnel was reported missing June 21 while in the care of his mother's boyfriend. For days, investigators searched woods, ponds and the tribe's wastewater treatment areas to no avail. Police said the boyfriend was not very cooperative and has consulted a lawyer.

Carnel's body was discovered on Thursday under a wood porch or deck at his single-story home, said Chamberlain, who is a cousin of Carnel's mother Jaimee Chamberlain.

The body "had to be in a grave. We had looked underneath before and didn't see anything," he said.

He said he didn't know why investigators went back to the house, which had been sealed off by tribal police days earlier. Authorities have announced no arrests.

Federal authorities ? who have jurisdiction over major crimes on Indian reservations ? were silent on the case Friday morning. A tribal spokesman said a news conference planned for Friday afternoon at the Isabella Indian Reservation was canceled. A spokeswoman for a U.S. attorney's office in Detroit, which oversees federal cases in the area, said she had no information.

A tribal police car sat outside the family's house, less than a mile from tribal police headquarters and the offices of the Saginaw Chippewa tribe. Just beyond the offices is the gleaming Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, which attracts gamblers from around the state and is the tribe's financial lifeblood.

Judy Klein, 68, of Mount Pleasant, drove to the boy's home about 70 miles north of Lansing on Friday morning to leave some flowers.

She said she was "sick about it" when she learned of the child's death.

"I'm a mother. I lost a child," she said, trying to hold back tears. "She was 26 and died in her sleep. I know the grief."

Klein left hydrangeas she had grown in her garden.

"This little boy is going back to the earth," she said.

At the vigil Thursday night attended by Jamie Chamberlain and other relatives, participants sang, played drums and spoke urging love and healing in the face of tragedy.

Carnel "didn't have time to grow up and enjoy life," tribal chief Dennis Kequom told the gathering. "He'll always be with us in our hearts."

Interacting mutations promote diversity

Thursday, June 28, 2012

\Genetic diversity arises through the interplay of mutation, selection and genetic drift. In most scientific models, mutants have a fitness value which remains constant throughout. Based on this value, they compete with other types in the population and either die out or become established. However, evolutionary game theory considers constant fitness values to be a special case. It holds that the fitness of a mutation also depends on the frequency of the mutation. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Pl?n and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver developed a model to address the scenario of mutations being frequency-dependent but having random fitness parameters. The results demonstrate that the dynamics that arise in random mutants increase the genetic diversity within a population. Fitness, though, may even decline.

Population geneticists generally study mutations with constant fitness values. However, frequency-dependent selection is a recurrent theme in evolution: it enables the evolution of new species without geographical separation (sympatric speciation) or a relatively rapid change in the immune system of a population.

A mutation may be advantageous for low frequencies, for instance, but the fitness of the mutant decreases with rising frequency. A reverse trend in the fitness value is also conceivable. "Our computer model combines aspects of population genetics and evolutionary game theory in order to obtain a new perspective on genetic evolution," says Arne Traulsen from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. Whereas mutations have a random yet fixed fitness value in many mathematical models, this new model also enables a change in random fitness values with the frequency of the different types.

The results of the simulations show that frequency-dependent selection leads to higher genetic diversity within a population of individuals even though diversity per se is not favoured. The interaction of different mutations and the emergence of new mutants support the development of dynamic diversity in the population. One mutant does not always need to replace all other mutations or the original population. "It is possible for different mutations to exist in parallel such that a new mutant does not to completely replace the residents," says Weini Huang, lead author of the study. What is particularly interesting is the fact that diversity in this model remains naturally limited.

Fitness, on the other hand, does not necessarily rise with frequency-dependent selection in contrast to constant selection. By way of example, a mutation may arise within cells which halts the production of substances that are passed on to other cells. This can initially be advantageous; however, if it reaches fixation, the average fitness of the cell population declines. Advantageous mutations can thereby be lost and deleterious ones become established.

Oil rises on better US manufacturing, housing data

The price of oil rose on some welcome news about U.S. manufacturing production and home sales.

Benchmark crude rose $1.29 to $80.64 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, gained 61 cents to $93.63 per barrel in London.

The Commerce Department said factories received more orders in May for long-lasting manufactured goods such as heavy machinery, computers and communications equipment. Oil and other energy products benefit from stronger manufacturing because they are used to help make and ship goods.

The report helped ease recent concerns about slower factory production in the U.S.

Separately, the National Association of Realtors said that Americans signed more contracts to buy previously occupied homes in May, which matched the fastest pace in two years. It follows other recent data that shows steady improvement in the housing market this year.

"Once again, U.S. economic data is confounding the critics," Price Futures Group oil analyst Phil Flynn said. "Maybe the economy isn't so dreary."

Yet, job growth remains tepid, consumer confidence fell in June for the fourth straight month and demand for gasoline remains weak as Americans worry about jobs and the overall economy.

The Energy Department said that the nation's crude oil supplies fell by 100,000 barrels to 387.2 million barrels, which is 7.7 percent above year-ago levels. Gasoline supplies grew by 2.1 million barrels to 204.8 million barrels. Demand for gas over the four weeks ended June 22 was 4.8 percent lower than a year earlier.

Meanwhile, traders also kept a close eye on developments in Europe ahead of a meeting later this week where government leaders will discuss the crippling debt crisis. Traders are uncertain what will happen during the two-day European summit, which starts Thursday. The goal is to work on solutions to the crisis has hurt economies within the eurozone and has filtered out to the U.S., China and other countries. But German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Wednesday that there would be no quick solution to the structural issues plaguing the continent.

At the pump, the national average for retail gasoline fell 1.4 cents overnight to $3.383 per gallon, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service. That's nearly 26 cents less than a month ago.

In other trading, natural gas prices jumped on expectations that demand will strengthen because of blistering heat in parts of the nation, particularly the Midwest. Natural gas rose 13 cents, or 4.6 percent, to $2.89 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Heating oil increased 2 cents to $2.59 per gallon and wholesale gasoline fell 2 cents to $2.506 per gallon.

North Carolina Sea Level Rises Despite Senators

News | Energy & Sustainability

Less than two weeks after the state's senate passed a climate science-squelching bill, research shows that sea level along the coast between NC and Mass. is rising faster than anywhere on Earth

From Nature magazine

Could nature be mocking North Carolina's law-makers? Less than two weeks after the state's senate passed a bill banning state agencies from reporting that sea-level rise is accelerating, research has shown that the coast between North Carolina and Massachusetts is experiencing the fastest sea-level rise in the world.

Asbury Sallenger, an oceanographer at the US Geological Survey in St Petersburg, Florida, and his colleagues analysed tide-gauge records from around North America. On 24 June, they reported in Nature Climate Change that since 1980, sea-level rise between Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and Boston, Massachusetts, has accelerated to between 2 and 3.7 millimetres per year. That is three to four times the global average, and it means the coast could see 20?29 centimetres of sea-level rise on top of the metre predicted for the world as a whole by 2100 ( A. H. Sallenger Jr et al. Nature Clim. Change http://doi.org/hz4; 2012).

?Many people mistakenly think that the rate of sea-level rise is the same everywhere as glaciers and ice caps melt,? says Marcia McNutt, director of the US Geological Survey. But variations in currents and land movements can cause large regional differences. The hotspot is consistent with the slowing measured in Atlantic Ocean circulation, which may be tied to changes in water temperature, salinity and density.

North Carolina's senators, however, have tried to stop state-funded researchers from releasing similar reports. The law approved by the senate on 12 June banned scientists in state agencies from using exponential extrapolation to predict sea-level rise, requiring instead that they stick to linear projections based on historical data.

Following international opprobrium, the state's House of Representatives rejected the bill on 19 June. However, a compromise between the house and the senate forbids state agencies from basing any laws or plans on exponential extrapolations for the next three to four years, while the state conducts a new sea-level study.

According to local media, the bill was the handiwork of industry lobbyists and coastal municipalities who feared that investors and property developers would be scared off by predictions of high sea-level rises. The lobbyists invoked a paper published in the Journal of Coastal Research last year by James Houston, retired director of the US Army Corps of Engineers' research centre in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Robert Dean, emeritus professor of coastal engineering at the University of Florida in Gainesville. They reported that global sea-level rise has slowed since 1930 ( J. R. Houston and R. G. Dean J. Coastal Res. 27 , 409 ? 417 ; 2011) ? a contention that climate sceptics around the world have seized on.

Speaking to Nature, Dean accused the oceanographic community of ideological bias. ?In the United States, there is an overemphasis on unrealistically high sea-level rise,? he says. ?The reason is budgets. I am retired, so I have the freedom to report what I find without any bias or need to chase funding.? But Sallenger says that Houston and Dean's choice of data sets masks acceleration in the sea-level-rise hotspot.

North Carolina is not the only hotspot for efforts to legislate away the reality of sea-level rise. In 2011, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality removed all references to rising sea levels from a scientific study of Galveston Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. And this month, the Virginia General Assembly passed a bill commissioning a study on rising sea levels ? but only after references to sea-level rise and climate change had been removed.

Risky Business: Does ERM Increase Firm Value? ? Management INK

As JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon came under fire for the bank?s $2 billion trading loss, the critical issue of risk management again came to the forefront of business dialogue.

Against the backdrop of the global financial crisis, a study in the Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Finance (JAAF) looks at enterprise risk management (ERM), a rising but little-researched paradigm in global financial institutions?as well as in the government?to evaluate its effectiveness.

Michael K. McShane, Anil Nair, and Elzotbek Rustambekov, all of Old Dominion University, published ?Does Enterprise Risk Management Increase Firm Value?? in the October 2011 issue of JAAF. Click here to view more articles in this issue.

The authors explain in the abstract:

Enterprise risk management (ERM) has emerged as a construct that ostensibly overcomes limitations of silo-based traditional risk management (TRM), yet little is known about its effectiveness. The scant research on the relationship between ERM and firm performance has offered mixed findings and has been limited by the lack of a suitable proxy for the degree of ERM implementation. Using Standard and Poor?s newly available risk management rating, the authors find evidence of a positive relationship between increasing levels of TRM capability and firm value but no additional increase in value for firms achieving a higher ERM rating. Considering these results, the authors suggest directions for future research.

The Dalmatian Guide To Changing Your Name | Weddingbee

Guess what I received in the mail yesterday? My new social security card! That?s right folks, I am officially a Mrs. And what am I going to do to celebrate? Well, I?m going to write this post, of course! Now let me be clear: when I say ?The Dalmatian Guide?? I do not mean to claim ownership. All of the helpful tips in this post are thanks to the incredible, amazing, crazy-organized Sister Dalmatian a.k.a. MOH A.

Knowing that I was crazy busy moving and starting a new job immediately after the honeymoon, Mama Dalmatian asked MOH A to share with me any tips she had about changing names since she went through the process a year ago. Now, most people would probably write up a quick email or have a quick phone conversation and share a thing or two about what they did. However, that is not MOH A?s style. So what did I receive in my inbox? Okay, I?ll stop making you answer questions. What I received in my inbox was a three page document perfectly outlining the steps to changing your name. So, here you have it?MOH A?s Guide to Changing Your Name (in true perfectionist style, this came to me personalized with links to our particular county clerk, etc., but for the sake of the wider audience I have edited it to be slightly more generic):

Step 1: Marriage Certificate

- Request a few copies of your marriage certificate from the county clerk. You really only need one or two, but maybe get three to be safe. (Note: for the Davidson County clerk we had to pay per copy, so we stuck with two copies).

Step 2: Social Security Administration

- General info on name-change here

- Bring a completed application + original certified copy of marriage license + two forms of ID (driver?s license, passport, birth certificate) to your local SSA office

- Once you have your new SS card or are in the system, move on to step three.

Step 3: Driver?s License

- Bring old license, marriage certificate, Social Security card/confirmation and checkbook.

- You may need proof of address if you are changing that too (electric bill, etc.).

- Bring your car title and registration with you and get the name changed on those too.

Step 4: Everything Else!

- Once you have your driver?s license, scan your marriage certificate and license (front and back). That way you can just print copies as you need them.

- From here on the order doesn?t matter much?do important things first to avoid confusion.

General Tips

- Decide first exactly what you want your full name to be and what you want on your IDs. There may be some mix-ups if you are using two middle names (i.e. middle name and maiden name), so just decide ahead of time and be consistent.

- Most places (except Social Security) don?t need an original marriage certificate, so don?t waste a certified one if they just ask for a copy.

- Figure out if you?re going to change your email address. If so, do that first and change your email and mailing address on everything at the same time that you do the name change.

- Usually you can do email/address changes online, but you often have to call or send a formal request letter (along with copies of your marriage certificate and new driver?s license) before they?ll change the name. Type up a standard letter with your info, then you can fill in the blanks and print, sign, and mail it out as needed.

- Before you deal with banks and credit cards, figure out what you and your spouse are doing with your finances (i.e. combining to joint accounts and credit cards, keeping your own, etc.). You may end up closing some accounts, so don?t bother with the name change on those. If you?re adding each other to your accounts, do it at the same time as the name change.

Places to Change Your Name

- Social Security Card

- Driver?s License

- Car title, registration and insurance

- Passport?this one?s a pain, you have to get pictures, fill out forms, and pay a fee

- Job?including tax forms, retirement accounts, other benefits

- Bank accounts (usually have to do this in person)?checking, savings, ATM card, checks

- Credit cards?don?t forget store cards (Macy?s, etc.)

- Stock accounts

- Health insurance (dental insurance, vision insurance, etc.)

- Professional licenses, professional societies/memberships, etc.

- Rental lease, electric, gas/heat, cable, internet, rental insurance

- Cell phone

- Voter registration?usually changing it at the DMV takes care of this, but varies by state

- Medical?doctor, dentist, ophthalmologist, gynecologist, pharmacy

- Airline frequent flyer programs

- Memberships/reward programs?AAA auto club, Costco, Barnes & Noble, etc.

- Magazine subscriptions

- Schools?alumni associations, etc.

- Websites?Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

Whew! So, raise your hand if you love MOH A and her awesome guide to changing your name! It is definitely an overwhelming task, and even though we have been married for over a month I have just finished Step 2. But having all the steps so neatly laid out ahead of me makes me significantly less stressed about what else I need to do. So, thank you, thank you, thank you, MOH A. You seriously rock.

I hope you find these tips as helpful as I did!

Did you benefit from someone else?s organization?

Are you changing your name when you get married?

Funny, if you follow the links to the CDC page on the Wayback Machine, it expressly contradicts what the scare-site "Child Health Safety" claims.

NIP: Vacsafe/Concerns/Autism/FAQs-Autism and MMR

"Italy Court"? Shouldn't that be "Italian Court"? Somehow sites with weird grammar (not to mention bizarre claims contradicted by its own sources) just don't seem credible.

Scientists struggle with mathematical details

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Scientists would like to believe that the popularity of new theories depends entirely on their scientific value, in terms of novelty, importance and technical correctness. But the Bristol study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, shows that scientists pay less attention to theories that are crammed with mathematical details.

Dr Tim Fawcett and Dr Andrew Higginson, researchers in Bristol's School of Biological Sciences, found that scientific articles presenting many equations on each page are seldom referred to by other scientists. The most maths-heavy articles are referenced 50 per cent less often than those with little or no maths.

Many scientists, including the celebrated theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, have worried about how mathematics will affect the impact of their work, but the Bristol study is the first to measure the extent of the problem.

Dr Fawcett said: "This is an important issue because nearly all areas of science rely on close links between mathematical theory and experimental work. If new theories are presented in a way that is off-putting to other scientists, then no one will perform the crucial experiments needed to test those theories. This presents a barrier to scientific progress."

So is there any way to overcome the communication barrier between theory and experiments? One long-term remedy would be to improve the mathematical training of science graduates.

But there could be more immediate solutions, as Dr Higginson explained: "Scientists need to think more carefully about how they present the mathematical details of their work. The ideal solution is not to hide the maths away, but to add more explanatory text to take the reader carefully through the assumptions and implications of the theory."

But the authors of the study fear that this approach will be resisted by some scientific journals, for which page space is at a premium.

"The top journals want articles to be extremely concise, with many of the technical details going in an online appendix," said Dr Fawcett.

"Fortunately, our study suggests that equations in an appendix have no effect on citation rates. So moving some of the equations to an appendix may be the most pragmatic solution."

Japan Inc's ritual hiring past sell-by date

TOKYO (Reuters) - Each April, hundreds of new graduates report for work in Japan's corporate world, all on the same day, all dressed in standard business black, and all ready to be molded into staunch company loyalists.

Across the country, companies select and groom new staff under a decades-old formula that puts an emphasis on loyalty, diligence and conformity, not the vision or out-of-box thinking that experts say corporate Japan badly needs to halt its decline.

The current heads of Japan's companies are often criticized for failing to keep pace with fleet-footed foreign rivals, but most are a product of that system and there is nothing to suggest it will change any time soon.

"Companies were assessing your personality and looking whether you would fit," says Erina Seki, 23, one of the students Reuters followed through the annual five-month ritual of dozens of job fairs, workshops and interviews.

"At one insurance firm, I was told that I wouldn't fit because I was too vocal about my opinions," said the fourth-year accounting major from Tokyo's Rikkyo University, who finally landed a job with an outplacement service company.

"I thought companies were looking for perfect matches with the corporate culture."

Unlike in many other parts of the world where the ability to deal with the unexpected or devise new solutions to problems are prized, the top concern for Japanese employers seems to be how well a recruit would blend in and get along with others, the students said.

They recounted being asked same generic questions over and over again in what could be up to a dozen of interviews for a single prospective employer.

The outcome? A culture where even outsiders brought in to shake things up struggle to challenge the status-quo.

The six-year reign of Welsh-born Howard Stringer at the helm of Sony Corp , which ended after a dismal run of losses, and the ouster of another Briton, Michael Woodford, as head of camera and endoscope maker Olympus are cases in point.

Both were replaced by company veterans.

A shortage of strong leaders and risk-takers, which the present recruitment and training system seems unable to produce, is seen as a major cause of the woes of Japanese companies, from its once-famed electronics industry to auto giants.

Toyota Motor , once the world's biggest automaker, has seen its market share slip to General Motors and Volkswagen and has South Korea's Hyundai in its rear-view mirror.

Electronics giants Sony , Panasonic and Sharp , slow to revamp loss-making TV businesses, suffered a combined $20 billion loss in the past fiscal year, hammered by competition from South Korea's Samsung Electronics .

Squeezed by nimbler foreign rivals overseas, Japanese companies also face a shrinking market at home. The population peaked in 2008 at just over 128 million and the government forecasts it will keep falling over coming decades to about 90 million in 2060 when 40 percent of Japanese will be 65 or older.

Almost every major Japanese company participates in the annual mass-hiring ritual that dates back to the country's post-war economic miracle, when skilled workers were in short supply and companies began hiring graduates in bulk, trained them for months and secured their loyalty by guaranteeing a job for life.

That guarantee is no longer there, but the ritual continues.

STAMINA NOT FLAIR

With just over nine jobs awaiting every 10 of the 381,000 students graduating and looking for work this year, and the most coveted with the likes of Toyota or Nomura even more scarce, job-hunting has become fiercely competitive.

Between early December when big companies start advertising entry-level positions and April when they make offers to fourth-year students, each student will typically send up to a hundred or more applications, attend dozens of presentations and endure multiple interviews with 20-30 prospective employers.

"At the peak, I attended 2-3 seminars a day, I almost had no time to attend school," said Yuki Yamamoto, a law graduate from Keio University.

"School was in an exam period in January but irrespective of this, job seminars continued. Some students even gave up taking exams."

The system has also led to a flourishing industry in cram schools.

Chihiro Obata, a senior official at Vein Carry Japan that offers courses to candidates, says the number of such private schools has quadrupled over the past three years in Tokyo to about 80.

Her company charges 105,000 yen (about $1,300) for courses that teaches students how to write CVs and job applications, how to bow and exchange cards and simply look good in interviews. It offers to refund the fee if students do not land a job.

Last year, a Tokyo department store even organized a workshop for students of both sexes on how to use skin lotions to look fresh in interviews.

Under a voluntary pact, the country's leading 840 or so companies grouped in its top business lobby Keidanren, recruit during the same five-month window. Uniform entry salaries, today at around 200,000 yen per month, are also common.

Rehearsed and scripted, the process leaves little room for spontaneity and frustrated students talk of a mad scramble of job fairs held in vast convention halls.

"Skills seem to carry little importance," says Shunsaku Funaki, a 21-year-old politics major from Tokyo Kokushikan University who so far has not found a job.

"Companies want to train and educate students from scratch and that hasn't changed over the years. I want the culture of uniform job-hunting activity to be destroyed and want companies to seek students with variety."

FOLLOWERS OR LEADERS?

Not only the students are fed up. Management experts and recruitment professionals say that if Japanese companies are serious about change, the system that defines their DNA has to change first.

"If you bring somebody in when they just graduate, they practically have no business experience, so how are they going to come up with new ideas?" says Christine Wright, Asia operations director with Hays recruitment firm.

"They would just think the way the company thinks."

Hiring managers however say the old formula has its merits.

"We are able to secure a certain number of students who meet certain criteria relatively easily, and it helps reduce costs of employee education because that is done simultaneously," says Hiroshi Ishihara, recruiting group manager at home electric appliance maker Hitachi .

Takashi Shinohara, human resources manager with office equipment maker Ricoh , says the system allows his company, which hires 200-300 graduates each year, plan and maintain a steady age profile of its workforce.

Although mid-career hiring is on the rise, at most big firms the track to top management still involves joining the company fresh out of school.

Ricoh's Shinohara acknowledges the need for changes but says it is hard to envisage a radical overhaul.

"Companies do hiring and students do the job-hunting simultaneously. This system is entrenched."

Online retailer Rakuten , which uses English as its main language and has been recruiting engineering graduates from China, has modified rather than ditched the system even though it is not part of the Keidanren pact.

Yoshinori Kondo, head of its global talent development office, says it is important for newcomers to stick together, so Rakuten still hires them in batches. But it does so twice a year to accommodate foreign students who graduate in the autumn rather than in spring like their Japanese peers.

Other companies also focus on foreign graduates as a source of new ideas. Hitachi, for example, wants to double the number of graduate positions filled by foreigners to 10 percent.

Hiring Japanese educated overseas is also an option to bring in some diversity. However, the number of Japanese studying abroad has been declining since 2004 as they are reluctant to leave for fear of missing the mass hiring.

Experts also warn that firms that hire foreigners will not succeed in getting diversity and new thinking if they try to squeeze them into the old seniority-based system and pre-determined career path.

For now, signs are that even an exponent of a new, more dynamic Japan, such as Rakuten, is not quite ready to let go.

While its employees are expected to show initiative and "venture spirit," they should do so in the vein of "The 5 Concepts of Success" laid down by company founder and CEO Hiroshi Mikitani, it says.

(AP) ? A wildfire near Colorado Springs erupted and grew out of control to more than 3 square miles over the weekend, prompting the evacuation of a popular vacation town and the closure of nearby highways Sunday.

The 5,000 residents of Manitou Springs were ordered to leave Saturday hours after the blaze erupted in El Paso County. It quickly grew to more than 2,000 acres amid tinder dry conditions, gusty winds and temperatures that reached into the 90s.

The fire also prompted evacuations for the west side of Colorado Springs and in the towns of Cascade and Ute Pass, but no structures have been destroyed and no buildings were under immediate threat.

Manitou Springs fire department's chaplain and public information officer, the Rev. David Hunting, said the orders were precautions because "fires can change their behavior dramatically" in such weather conditions.

In some neighborhoods, police cruisers rolled down streets, issuing the order to leave through a loudspeaker.

"Colorado Springs Police Department," an officer said. "This is a mandatory evacuation notice. Evacuate now."

Hundreds of other residents were under voluntary evacuation orders and were packing up, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported Saturday. Officials also closed traffic into Manitou Springs, a popular vacation town at the base of Pikes Peak, and shut down the Pikes Peak Highway.

About 350 firefighters were dispatched to the blaze, but the fire remained zero percent contained as it burned through the night. Crews were expected to contend with similarly hot and gusty weather on Sunday. The National Weather Service said temperatures were forecast to be close to 100 degrees throughout much of the state.

Colorado and other parts of the Southwest have become a tinderbox for wildfires as the region faces extremely dry or prolonged drought conditions. At least seven wildfires are burning across the state, where officials have been challenged by one of the most severe wildfire seasons in recent memory.

The weather also helped fuel another blaze that sparked Saturday and destroyed 21 structures near the mountain community of Estes Park. Investigators were determining whether it started in a cabin or as a wildfire before moving toward the homes, according to the Denver Post.

"Even though we lost 21 (structures), which is a huge tragedy, we saved many homes because of firefighters' efforts," Estes Park Fire Chief Scott Dorman told evacuees.

A separate fire continued burning near Fort Collins, scorching more than 118 square miles and destroying at least 191 homes. That blaze has become the largest and most expensive in Colorado history.

Elsewhere in the West, firefighters made progress against wildfires in Utah, New Mexico and California.

? In Utah, about 2,300 residents were allowed to return to their homes Saturday after officials determined a wildfire no longer posed a threat to homes near Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain. Officials believe that fire was started Thursday by target shooters. A second major fire has burned 16,500-acres of high desert near the central Utah town of Delta.

? In California, a wildfire about 60 miles north of Los Angeles triggered evacuations of campgrounds around an off-road recreation area on Saturday. Ventura County fire officials said the fire has blackened at least 400 acres in the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, along the Interstate 5 corridor in Gorman.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained after heavy rain Friday. The 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso began June 4. Meanwhile, the largest wildfire in state history was 87 percent contained. It has burned more than 464 square miles after two blazes merged on May 16.

The Scarlet Manor

The Scarlet manor looks as if it was a normal mansion where people of luxury lives. This isn't wrong, but I wouldn't say that it's residents are....people. They appear human, walk, talk, and act like them, but they are most certainly not. The Scarlet residence are Vampires. They're a family consisting of brothers and sisters who lives with maids and butlers. It is not sure if the helpers in their home are humans or vampires, but we can assume the worst. Only a few leaves the manor and it's often the butler. Every now and then the maid would leave as well, but it's not likely. Whatever happens in this manor, stays in the manor.
