Infrared vision in a cichlid fish

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Biologists from the University of Bonn have discovered that the cichlid fish Pelvicachromis taeniatus can see in the near infrared range; this was thought to be unlikely until now. Seeing in the infrared range is apparently helping fish to hunt in shallow African rivers. The results will be published in the journal "Naturwissenschaften" and are already available online now.

A research team in the work group of Prof. Dr. T. C. M. Bakker at the Institute for Evolutionary Biology and Ecology, University of Bonn, has been studying the biology of the African cichlid fish Pelvicachromis taeniatus for years.

Researchers conducted a prey choice experiment

Researchers investigated the ability to see in the infrared range using a classical prey choice experiment. P. taeniatus also feeds on small crustaceans, such as freshwater shrimp. These prey animals reflect near infrared radiation. The researchers used this fact to examine the perception of infrared light. In a dark room a prey selection experiment was set up illuminated by infrared lamps. In front of the water basin containing the fish freshwater shrimp were offered in two separate chambers. One of the chambers with the prey was covered with a filter blocking infrared wavelengths. The other chamber was covered with a filter that would let only infrared light pass. "Consequently, the fish were only able to perceive the freshwater shrimp in one chamber in the near infrared range" explains Dr. |Sebastian Baldauf, one of the scientists involved in the study.

Physiologists thought that seeing in the near ir range would be unlikely

The experiment showed that the fish spent more time and were more frequently in front of the chamber that let infrared light pass. "The fish detect their prey based on infrared radiation alone" reports the biologist from the University of Bonn. "Until now, physiologists thought that noise levels in the near-infrared range were too high to allow visual perception." As the experiment has shown, the fish were capable of perceiving prey in a wavelength range above 780 nanometers. It is well-known that snakes can perceive far infrared radiation at longer wavelengths above 2,000 nanometers. "But they don't use their eyes for this purpose; instead they have a heat-sensitive pit organ," says Dr. Baldauf. Human eyes are not capable of seeing infrared radiation.

Seeing infrared is useful in the natural habitat

The advantage of the fish's ability to see infrared may become obvious when you look at its natural habitat. The shallow rivers of West Africa have a relatively large amount of infrared radiation. "That's exactly why it makes sense to use infrared cues for detecting prey organisms," explains Dr. Baldauf. "It is a clear selective advantage if you can perceive additional signals that others cannot perceive." It is quite likely that other animals also have evolved a perception of near-infrared radiation, e.g. for hunting or orientation, such as other fishes or birds. The researchers from the University of Bonn now want to study more closely the physiology of infrared vision, and to what extent infrared radiation is relevant in other contexts.

Infrared radiation in partner selection?

When performing color measurements on these fish the researchers found that certain regions of the cichlid body reflect the light in the near-infared range. "We found that females reflect infrared radiation from their belly region, and males from their fins" says Dr. Baldauf. The female belly is important for mate choice, and the fins are displayed during aggressive encounters between males. "Perhaps near-infrared signals play a role in visual communication in this species" says the biologist. "And that's what we additionally would like to study in further experiments."

Veterans More Likely to Seek Help

Alcohol use is fairly common among veterans of every branch of the armed forces for a number of reasons. Heavy stress, post-traumatic stress, depression, and anxiety are often the most common reasons for heavy substance use. Fortunately, there are a number of programs available for veterans, and those in active service, to seek help for their problems.

As a result, a new study presented at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting has shown that male veterans with a history of substance abuse are more likely than civilians to seek treatment; they are also more likely to report better overall health, and to be less depressed.

The study showed that:?

29 percent of veterans with substance abuse issues under the age of 50 sought treatment.?

17 percent of civilians with substance abuse issues under the age of 50 sought treatment.?

15 percent of veterans who drank heavily into their 30s reported being depressed.?

35 percent of civilians reported depression.?

?The findings suggest not only that Veterans Affairs treatment is available to help young veterans who have a history of heavy drinking, but that it is an effective service outreach to young veterans that can improve their health and overall quality of life,? said researcher Katherine Karriker-Jaffe, PhD. ?Those younger veterans without alcohol or drug problems may benefit from additional outreach from targeted services to improve their mental and physical health.?

What is substance abuse or heavy drinking?

According to the study, heavy drinking is having five or more drinks at a time, at least once a week.?

Veterans of foreign wars are more likely to engage in heavy use of substance abuse, according to the research. Non-deployed soldiers were less likely to engage in such behavior which is probably due to lower levels of stress. The study clearly shows that modern Veterans are more likely to seek help than those from conflicts of the past, testament to the fact that there are many more programs at their disposal in this day and age.

Ryan Gosling Exits Logan's Run

Ryan Gosling

Carl Erik Rinsch signed on to direct the Logan?s Run remake a few years ago, but he ended up passing on the sci-fi flick in favor of 47 Ronin (a 3D blockbuster that has endured its fair share of behind-the-scenes troubles). Drive actor/director duo Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn become attached thereafter, but there has been little in the way of significant updates since ? beyond reports about the script exchanging hands a few times, that is.

In his ?Remakes & Reboots??post, our Kofi Outlaw anticipated that Refn would also end up passing on Logan?s Run ? as he is too much of an ?outsider? to fit the demands of the studio system (without some significant restrictions in terms of creative freedom). Refn, as far as we know, is still attached ? but he might not be for much longer.

The reason? Gosling has passed on Logan?s Run, as confirmed by Variety?s Justin Kroll. Earlier this year, Refn said it was the concept (that is, a dystopian future where people are required to die prematurely, to prevent over-population) that had drawn him to the project. However, the opportunity to continue collaborating with Gosling surely played an important role in keeping his interest these past couple years, as the two have established a strong working relationship (they?ve already reunited on Refn?s next film, Only God Forgives).

Gosling is preparing to work on his directorial debut on How to Catch a Monster, featuring his Drive costar Christina Hendricks (who, of course, is best known for her work on Mad Men). That, in combination with slow development on Logan?s Run, might have contributed to his departure ? seeing how there?ve been no reports of, say, a fallout between the actor and Refn (or something similar that would lead to Gosling moving on).

Drive - Nicolas Winding Refn

Nicolas Winding Refn

Refn, as it were, has voiced a desire to bring back the ?Driver? character in a future film (though, not a sequel to Drive), so he?s clearly still interested in working with Gosling again. Moreover, the former?s been linked to a number of projects in recent months (including, a Barbarella TV series, a Button Man?adaptation, and the Equalizer movie with Denzel Washington), suggesting that perhaps both he and Gosling have had their sights set elsewhere (other than on Logan?s Run) for a while now.

Expect an official update on Refn and Logan?s Run in the near future ? though, all things considered, it?s a fair bet that he?s already (unofficially) left the project, which means this particular remake has been knocked back to square one.

Spa Trend Alert | Spa Week Daily

We?ve just been alerted of a new spa trend? and this is one for the books. Of course we already knew that reading was a healthy exercise, providing brain stimulation and sparking our creative side.

But now, reading just got even better for you ? and the idea of joining a book club just got WAY more enticing. As recently reported by The New York Times, an increasing number of spas are forming book clubs! This new revelation has got us thinking ? why didn?t someone come up with this sooner? It?s a match made in heaven and we just don?t know what took cupid so long to land the arrow.

It makes perfect sense ? who doesn?t absolutely love to sit back, relax, and read while enjoying a pampering pedicure? With the addition of book clubs, spas are getting both more social and intellectual. Some of the spas are even bringing the authors in to speak at the meetings ? a nice perk for the fans and the authors, who often use this opportunity for a nice soothing break from grueling book tours.

According to Susan Grey, regional vice president for spa operations at Bliss, this adds to the spas mission of being a ?place to come for overall wellness.? We totally agree, and think this is a great idea!

Spas like The Spa at the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, NH (where you can still get Spa Week deals until October 26th!) even offer book club customers discounted services. If that?s not a good enough reason to start reading, we don?t know what is!

What do you think of this idea? Tell us which books you think would be perfect for a spa book club meeting below!

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Disgraced Wall Street titan and philanthropist Rajat Gupta was sentenced to only two years in prison, a much lighter sentence than U.S. prosecutors had demanded, even though the federal judge who imposed it on Wednesday called his insider trading crimes "disgusting" and "a terrible breach of trust."

Gupta was also ordered to pay a $5 million fine. He was convicted in Manhattan federal court last June for leaking Goldman Sachs boardroom secrets to Raj Rajaratnam, the hedge fund manager at the center of a U.S. government crackdown on insider trading over the past four years.

Some legal experts said the sentence came as a surprise, while others said the judge struck a fine balance.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff told a somber courtroom audience, including Gupta's wife and four adult daughters, that the illegal sharing of corporate secrets at the height of the 2008 financial crisis "was the functional equivalent of stabbing Goldman in the back."

Gupta, 63, gave no visible reaction to the sentence, which was given at the end of a 30-minute statement in which the judge spelled out the businessman's "extraordinary" philanthropy over decades that stood in stark contrast to his crimes.

Bill Gates, Microsoft Corp's co-founder, and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan were among 400 friends and luminaries who had written letters to the judge urging leniency.

During Gupta's trial, the court heard how Gupta had tipped off his then friend and business associate Rajaratnam between September and October of 2008. Within minutes of a conference call of members of Goldman's board on September 23, 2008, Gupta told Rajaratnam that influential investor Warren Buffett was infusing $5 billion into the investment bank. Rajaratnam traded on the information as the market was closing.

In his statement on Wednesday, the judge said the tip "was not only overwhelming, but it was disgusting in its implications ... a terrible breach of trust" at a time when Goldman Sachs was in turmoil.

But the judge also said: "I have never encountered a defendant whose past history suggests such an extraordinary devotion ... to people in need."

Rakoff ordered Gupta to begin his sentence on January 8, 2013. He denied Gupta's lawyer's bid to have him freed on bail pending an appeal, which could last as long as two years.

The former Goldman director is the most influential corporate figure to be convicted in the wide U.S. probe of insider trading involving fund managers, traders, consultants and executives. He is a former global head of the McKinsey & Co management consultancy, and once sat on the boards of Procter & Gamble Co and American Airlines as well advising philanthropies including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gupta's sentence was less than the eight to 10 years sought by prosecutors, but more than the punishment of probation and community service in Rwanda that Gupta's lawyers had proposal. The judge dismissed that proposal as "a kind of Peace Corps for insider traders."

The sentence was also less than some other insider trading defendants who went to trial and received four, five and even 10 years imprisonment. Rajaratnam is serving an 11-year prison sentence, one of the longest for insider trading.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Tarlowe on Wednesday argued for a sentence of at least eight years, telling the court "Mr Gupta knew as much about the sanctity of these types of corporate confidences as anybody, and that's what makes it so shocking."

New York securities class action and shareholder rights lawyer Mark Rifkin said the judge "understood both sides of the argument, and the relatively light sentence he imposed balances Gupta's misuse of his position against a lifetime of good work."

But Andrew Stoltmann, an attorney and investor rights advocate based in Chicago, wondered whether Gupta's "Mother Teresa-like halo" had warranted a sentence that was "little more than a slap on the wrist."

"He had such an important role at some of these companies that it is kind of the ultimate betrayal of trust."

When Gupta took his turn to address the court, he read for six minutes from a prepared statement, using bland language that stopped short of fully admitting his conduct, but apologizing to "extraordinary institutions and outstanding people" he knows and to his family.

"I feel terrible that they have been burdened with totally undeserved negative attention. I apologize to them and ask for their forgiveness."

Federal judges have wide leeway in sentencing, and Rakoff has a reputation for veering from guidelines designed for courts in handing down punishment. Gupta had faced a maximum sentence of 20 years for securities fraud and five years for conspiracy.

Gupta's lawyer, Gary Naftalis, arguing for a lenient sentence, said his client had suffered a "fall from grace of Greek tragedy proportions."

"This was an iconic figure who had been a role model for countless people around the globe," Naftalis said. "He is no more."

The case is USA v Gupta, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-cr-907.

Mayor accused of ?muzzling? Township Council members

Does Mayor Jack Froese have the legal right to prohibit a councillor from quizzing a speaker at a public hearing?

Councillor Kim Richter asked for a legal opinion after she was ruled out of order by Froese during a public hearing on Oct. 15

Froese made the same ruling on questions from Councillors Charlie Fox and Steve Ferguson, but only Richter challenged him after he stopped her from asking a question that apparently did not pertain directly to the discussion at a hearing.

Later in the meeting, Richter presented a motion seeking a legal opinion, charging that the ?muzzling? of council members ?does not demonstrate good governance or good service to the public.?

Before the motion could be debated, Councillor Bob Long suggested that the matter be referred to council?s Oct. 29 workshop.

Before every public hearing, the mayor or senior planner reads a preamble that spells out council?s responsibilities, and those of the public.

?Decorum must be maintained at all times (and) this includes refraining from applause, booing or heckling.?

On Monday, Froese read: ?Council members should not express their views nor debate the bylaws, but may question speakers to clarify particular points in the submissions.?

During a hearing to remove age restrictions from a new development in the 7700 block of 200 Street, Richter had wanted to ask speaker Jacob de Raadt a question.

Richter said later that she was interested in hearing what de Raadt, a professional engineer, had to say on Universal Design, a concept to produce buildings, products and environments that are accessible both to the able-bodied ad those with a disability.

De Raadt was one of a handful of speakers who support Universal Design and Safer Homes Standards.

?I was interested in hearing his opinion on the matter,? Richter said later.

She chided the mayor for restricting members of the public from expressing themselves in council chambers.

?But he?s crossed the line when he restricts duly elected councillors from asking questions of the public.

?I am very disappointed in how this mayor runs a public meeting.

?We are servants of the people we represent and should always respect that. I believe the mayor owes me and the public an apology.?

It was de Raadt whom Froese asked several times to respect the five-minute limit on speakers at public hearings.

Apple event: Apple unveils iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad

News

This morning, just six months after unveiling the third-generation iPad, Apple unveiled the long-rumoured iPad mini along with a fourth-generation of the standard model. Despite the 100 million iPads Apple sold in just 2.5 years, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, ?we?re not taking our foot off the gas?.

Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller (pictured) showed off both devices today. ?You can hold it in one hand,? Schiller said of the iPad mini, as he highlighted its aluminum and glass enclosure. ?It?s incredibly thin ? and beautiful from every angle.?

The iPad mini is 7.2mm thick ? 23 percent thinner than the new, fourth-generation iPad ? ?thin as a pencil,? as Schiller put it. It weighs 308g, which is half the weight of the previous iPad. ?It?s as light as a pad of paper.?

The iPad mini is available in white with silver or black with slate black, much like the iPhone 5.

In determining what size to make the iPad mini?s screen, Schiller said, Apple engineers worked to make the device smaller, but not ?so small that it stops being incredibly useful?. The iPad mini screen measures 7.9 inches diagonally. Like the iPad 2, the iPad mini employs a 1024-by-768 resolution, meaning all existing iPad apps work with the iPad mini, too.

Schiller said that the iPad mini is great for the same tasks that the full-size iPad is good for: games, Facebook, web browsing, email, GarageBand, iWork and so on. ?I could sit here and list 275,000 examples? of what the iPad mini is good for, Schiller said, referring to the number of iPad-optimised apps in the App Store.

Compared to Android tablets, Schiller said, the iPad mini is vastly superior. Apps are custom-built for the iPad, but on Android tablets, apps are often blown-up phone apps that aren?t optimised for the device.

Inside the iPad mini, Schiller said, ?the technologies ? are equal to or better than the iPad 2?. The iPad mini uses Apple?s dual-core A5 chip. It has a FaceTime HD front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel iSight camera on the back. It gets the same LTE capabilities as the fourth-generation iPad with LTE, and faster Wi-Fi, too. Of course, it uses the Lightning connector. Apple says that, like the other iPads in the lineup, it still offers 10 hours of battery life; the company boasts that the iPad mini uses the largest and thinnest battery Apple?s ever made.

The iPad mini will be available in a variety of configurations. The iPad mini with Wi-Fi connectivity starts at?$369 for the 16GB model, $479 for the 32GB model and $589 for the 64GB model. If you add in the option for cellular connectivity, those prices increase by $140. Pre-orders for the iPad mini will start on Friday, October 26. The Wi-Fi versions will ship from November 2 to many countries. Two weeks later, they?ll start to ship the iPads with cellular ? first in the US, and then later around the world. Apple also introduced a lineup of new Smart Covers for the iPad mini.

Schiller also took the wraps off the new fourth-generation iPad, saying, ?It?s amazing.? The new iPad uses the Apple A6X chip, a new chip that further improves upon the speed performance of the A6; the company claims that it?s twice as fast as the A5X, with double the graphics performance. It gets the same 10 hours of battery life as the third-generation iPad.

New to the fourth-generation iPad is a FaceTime HD front-facing camera and a Lightning port that replaces the 30-pin dock connector of old. And the Wi-Fi is twice as fast as in the previous generation.

Like the third-generation iPad, the fourth-generation iPad comes in black in white and will be priced from $539. Pre-orders for the fourth-generation iPad will follow the same schedule as the iPad mini, starting this Friday.

Substitute Sugary Drinks With These Alternatives To Lose Weight ...

Most people have heard at some point or another, ?soda is bad for you? but the question is- why are they bad?

If you?re anything like me, being reprimanded and told that ?something is bad? isn?t really going to stop me from doing it..I really need to know why and various options always help make the transition easier :)

So first off- why ?soda is bad?

Diet and regular sodas have both been linked to obesity, kidney damage, and certain cancers. Sodas are also connected to elevated blood pressure. The drinks are seen as a major contributor to the obesity epidemic and in a way- it?s not surprising. Soda is comparatively cheap and they are usually wrongly recognized to be ?low-calorie? items (which obviously, they are not- particularly when several soft drinks are drank).

Many studies indicate that overweight children and adults enjoy more sugary beverages than normal-weight kids and adults, and several studies found that the greater sugar-sweetened drinks people drank the greater their likelihood of becoming overweight. And here is where not simply soda, but sugary drinks bring it to the next level: the more sugary drinks you consume, the more food you are inclined to eat. Why? Because of the ?sugar highs and lows? of the soft drinks and the amount of caffeine. Sugary and processed foods (and drinks) often hold you over for 10-15 minutes before you find yourself looking for a snack again..or an additional sugary or caffeinated drink. A snack of lean protein and a complex carb can hold you over for three hours!

Why energy drinks are harmful

Energy drinks can be associated with all of the concerns of soda (above). But in addition to that is the even HIGHER level of caffeine. With soda the FDA limits just how much caffeine can be in soda (65mg per 12 oz), but with energy drinks, they are not controlled. ?The FDA does not regulate caffeine in energy drinks, some of which, like Cocaine, contain huge amounts of caffeine: 280 mg in an 8.4-ounce serving, compared with about 100 mg per 6 ounces in coffee.? (Boston Globe)

By and large, the added caffeine has not been discovered to be ?life-threatening?. However caffeine can increase anxiety, panic, some stomach problems, plus some cardiac arrhythmia.

Drinks high in sugar or high in caffeine options:

-flavored water..not the sort you shop for! Toss a few frozen strawberries in the water bottle, or have a pitcher of water in the fridge. The frozen fruit triples as ?water flavoring?, ice, and a healthy indulgence once it?s thawed out!

-green tea- it?s calorie-free (if you have it without milk or sugar) and naturally high in antioxidants

-seltzer water & juice- you get the fizziness of the soda (less the majority of the sugar and caffeine) together with flavor of your preferred juice. Or again, add items of frozen fruit to liven it up!

-soy milk- naturally sweet and generally are now offered in a variety of flavors, including almond and vanilla. The rewards show that soy milk may reduce your risk for heart disease and osteoporosis. Look for low-fat, unsweetened soy beverages to decrease calories

My conversations with Malala Yousafzai, the girl who stood up to the Taliban (+video)

Pakistani journalist Owais Tohid recalls his conversations with Malala Yousafzai, the outspoken 14-year-old girl whose shooting by the Taliban has outraged the world.

"Which one of you is Malala? Speak up, otherwise I will shoot you all," a hooded, bearded Taliban militant asked a bus full of schoolgirls on their way home earlier this week. "She is propagating against the soldiers of Allah, the Taliban. She must be punished," the Taliban militant shouted louder. Then, recognizing her, he shot her at a point blank range.

Travis Brecher reports.

Malala Yousafzai gained fame when it came out that she was the girl who was highly critical of the Taliban's ban on girls' education in the Swat valley, and blogging about her views and about the atrocities of Islamic militias controlling the valley from 2007-2009. The BBC blog, which was written in Urdu under a pen name, was nominated for several awards.?

"I wanted to scream, shout and tell the whole world what we were going through. But it was not possible. The Taliban would have killed me, my father, my whole family. I would have died without leaving any mark. So I chose to write with a different name. And it worked, as my valley has been freed," she told me when I invited her for an interview for the TV station I am heading now, ARY News.?

Doctors treating Malala now say bullets have been removed from her head and neck, but her condition is still critical. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have claimed responsibility for the attack and have a $100,000 government bounty against them. ?

Malala's friend, Shazia, who was also injured that day, recounted the event to me as her eyes filled with tears.

"They stopped our school van. They were riding on a bike. The masked man kept pointing guns at us and the other was shouting ?where is Malala?!? I froze with a flashback to the old dark days: I remembered the headless bodies, slaughtering of rivals ? merely on dissent or slightest doubt of spying ?the grotesque violence."

Just a few moments before, she said, the girls had been singing a traditional Pashtun folk song on their way back from school, its lyrics professing to sacrifice life for motherland, the beautiful valley of Swat.

"With a drop of my sweetheart's blood, Shed to defend the motherland, I will put a beauty spot on my forehead, Such would put to shame the rose in the garden," they sang. The song was made famous by Malala?s namesake, Malalai of Maiwand. The 19th century national folk hero fought against the British troops in the Second Anglo-Afghan War.

What's in a name?

The first time I met Malala, a couple of years ago, I asked her what her name signified. She answered:?"Probably, a hero like the Afghan heroine Malalai [of Maiwand] or Malalai Joya. I want to be a social activist and an honest politician like her," she said, smiling. Ms. Joya, a 30-something activist, politician, and writer who was bitterly critical of both the Taliban and the Karzai regime, was at one point dubbed the bravest woman of Afghanistan.?

Peter Mutharika in open landroverMZUZU--Archaic laws?

Malawi Police Service has told opposition leaders to stop imitating the presidential motorcade when conducting their rallies.

Kelvin Maiwa, police publicist, told Capital Radio that it's a breach of the Police Act (Section 20) for anyone apart from the president to have a motorcade comprising of motor-bikes and even an open Land Rover.

"It is a crime to imitate a president in any other way and anyone found doing so shall be arrested and face the long arm of law," said Maigwa.

While Maigwa didn't mention any names, former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) acting president Peter Mutharika has of late been using a convoy similar to that of the president.

According to the grapevine, DPP will unveil two helicopters that will be used to crisscross the country ahead of the 2014 general elections.

Mutharika has said "if you thought the 2009 campaign was something unheard of, then you ain't seen nothing yet."

Tips To Improve Your Video Game Skills | Marijuana for MRSA

Read reviews of games before you purchase them. You may be waiting for the new shooter game to come out, but if you buy it without reading reviews, it will be a huge waste of time. Check out at least three to five reviews before putting your money down on a game you won?t like.

As a parent of video-game-playing children, you likely have some anxieties about just what they?re exposed to when they play. The best way to learn more is to make video gaming into a family activity. Ask your kids to show you their games and how they play them, and make an effort to join in. You?ll have a much better understanding of their games and even perhaps do a little bonding in the process.

This is no joke ? work your hands out! Stress balls make an excellent device for working out the muscles of the hand between gaming sessions. This ensures you don?t develop cramping or other gaming-related hand disorders which could cut your gaming career short. Keep exercising that hand to keep it limber and nimble!

When playing some of the longer games on your console system, make sure to take a break and get away from the screen. Go outside for a few minutes and let your eyes adjust. Stretch your legs. You will start to notice how much better you play the games when you take these short breaks.

Monitor your child?s game playing. Many games are now played online where your child can interact with anyone who is playing the game online. Ask your child about his game playing and who he is talking to. You can also look into your child?s gaming system and set parental controls that allow you control over what your child is doing during his game play.

Modern video games are not without their dangers, and playing them obsessively might be the one to worry about most. If you know that a friend or family member is a gamer, be on the lookout for signs that they?re spending an immoderate amount of time playing. If they?re having trouble meeting their obligations at school, work, or in their social circle, it may be time to confront them about how they manage their gaming time.

Use video games to help your brain! As people age, their brains age, too and don?t work as well as they did when they were younger. There are many video games that help your brain get some well needed activity. By playing this games, it is shown that your brain age can be younger than your actual age.

It is important for you to remember that any game you play can become obsolete. If you spend too much time playing a certain game, think ahead to your future! Servers may shut down, your characters will cease to exist and your time will have been wasted. Spend a healthy amount of time playing any single game and leave room for your life too.

Try a game before you buy it. Video games are not cheap. Trying out the game before making the purchase helps you make a wide decision. Sometimes you can watch games played online. You can also rent many games. Or maybe you can play a friend?s game or play it at the video game store.

Play your video games on a great television or computer monitor. The graphics in the game are only as good as the equipment you use. Make sure that your tv screen or computer monitor displays colors well, has a great deal of definition and delivers great sound. That way you can get the most from your games.

There are many games that can be highly addictive, such as fighting games or sports games. This is something that could cause a problem down the road, as you will want to have control over your life and not let your games control you. Be aware of these addictive games and try not to fall into the trap of playing them for the majority of the day.

If you?re a parent and you want to know more about what your kids are playing on their game systems, simply find out the titles. When you go online, you can find out the rating, some reviews, and some walkthroughs. These things will help you to know what your kids are getting into at every level.

Be sure to research any games that you wish to buy before you buy them. Make sure you are getting the version of the game that works on your particular system since many are made for multiple systems. Also, be on the lookout for limited and special additions of your chosen title since these can be more expensive than the regular versions.

It doesn?t matter if you turn your game on for fun, learning or training, one thing is certain: it can really make considerable improvements in just about anything you do. Whether you are trying to be a better student, soldier, chef or business owner, there isn?t anything games can?t teach! Hopefully this article helps you reach new heights in your play.

Iran and US can agree on one thing: There are no direct talks planned

Iran's foreign minister echoed White House denials that the two countries are scheduled to have direct bilateral negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.

By Yeganeh Torbati,?Reuters / October 21, 2012

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaks to a gathering at the University of Havana, in Havana, Cuba, in January. The White House and the Iranian government say they are prepared to talk one-on-one to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no specific meeting date right now.

The New York Times, quoting unnamed US administration officials, had said on Saturday that secret exchanges between US and Iranian officials had yielded agreement "in principle" to hold one-on-one talks.

"We don't have any discussions or negotiations with America," Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told a news conference. "The [nuclear] talks are ongoing with the P5+1 group of nations. Other than that, we have no discussions with the United States."

The P5+1 group comprises the permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, Britain, China, France, and Russia - plus Germany.

The United States has been working with the P5+1 to pressure Iran?on its nuclear program, but with few results. The United States and other Western powers allege that the program is aimed at developing nuclear weapons, but Tehran says it is purely peaceful.

White house denies

The White House also denied the newspaper report, which came two days before President Barack Obama faces Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in a televised foreign policy debate.

"It's not true that the United States and?Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," US National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in a statement.

"We continue to work with the P5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally."

Why these sisters are voting 'No' on same-sex marriage ? Politics ...

MEXICO, Maine ? Their deep belief in God and Christian teachings is being boiled down to sound bites by the ?mainstream media,? and they say the ongoing debate over same-sex marriage in Maine is being dominated by those who support the idea.

That?s how Carol Daigle and her sisters, Valerie Litalien and Cindy Terrill, feel about Question 1 on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Deeply devoted to their religions ? Litalien is Catholic; Terrill and Daigle are Baptist ? the sisters sat together in the front pew of Daigle?s church Friday and spoke passionately about their beliefs and fears.

They are coming out publicly to say they oppose same-sex marriage, but they worry they will be cast as being hateful or bigoted.

?If this is the age of tolerance,? Daigle said, ?why aren?t we being heard? We are not threatening to harm anybody. We are not saying you should be in jail for any of this, but what we are saying is this degrades the foundation of the family and society, promotes diseases and dysfunction and tears down the person?s dignity.?

Daigle said she wanted to meet in her church and sit where she could see the cross behind the pulpit. Litalien had a rosary wrapped around one hand. She said she leans on her faith, prays on a regular basis and knows that God meant for men and women to be together in marriage, not same-sex couples.

?When people say they don?t see how it?s wrong, I say to them if you can show me in the Bible where God says it?s right, then I will agree with you,? Terrill said.

The sisters said that as much as they hear that gays and lesbians are discriminated against, it feels now that those who oppose same-sex marriage are the ones being treated with bias. Terrill said she lost a job over her views, and Litalien worries about saying where she lives for fear of retaliation.

?We are now the ones being forced into the shadows,? Daigle said. She said Maine voters decided the issue once when a citizen referendum overturned state legislation legalizing same-sex marriage.

?So, why are we doing this again?? Daigle asked. ?We didn?t bring this to them; they brought it to us. No means no.?

Many simply don?t dare to speak up for fear of being labeled hateful, Daigle said.

?Do you know how much courage it takes to go out in front of people and put up signs not to redefine marriage?? she asked. ?How much courage it takes to put it on the back of your car? You could have your windows broken.?

They know some in the Christian Civic League who have applied for and been granted concealed weapon permits because they faced death threats and other types of harassment.

?I?m not going to say all of them, but there is a radical segment ? just like someone can say it?s radical Muslims, there?s only a section of them ? there?s a radical segment of pro same-sex people that are extremely radical, and they will stop at nothing to get what they want,? Daigle said. ?Those are the ones that are forcing us into the shadows.?

The sisters say they want people to know they don?t hate gay people.

Litalien told a story of how a gay couple she knew helped her find a religious film for her grandson after the child was recovering from an illness that left him near death.

?We love them as a person, but we don?t have to agree with their lifestyle; but we love them as a person,? Litalien said.

She, Terrill and Daigle are among seven siblings including two other sisters and two brothers. They said the whole family was raised going to church. Although they now practice different versions of Christianity, they said they all believe in the same God.

?We are crying foul because anyone who disapproves of the lifestyle is being told they hate (gays and lesbians),? Litalien said. ?We are Christians and we are commanded to love. And my heart breaks for them being encouraged to stay in a harmful lifestyle that degrades the body and corrupts the soul. But we have no right to hate them and no right to tell them what they can and cannot do, but on that same note, we don?t have to accept same-sex marriage as normal and natural.?

THE RACE: Debate to juggle foreign policy, economy

The final presidential debate will focus on foreign policy. To stay on just the designated topic, however, President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney may have to steer clear of China and the Middle East.

They probably shouldn't discuss Europe or much of the rest of the world, either, at Monday's showdown in Boca Raton, Fla.

That's because it's nearly impossible to separate foreign policy from the American economy. What happens over there bears directly on jobs and living standards over here.

Tensions in the Middle East can send gasoline prices soaring. Recessions in Europe are pummeling U.S. manufacturers. And a trade war with China ? the world's second biggest economy ? would carry huge risks to both nations.

China is both the world's leading exporter and the United States' largest creditor.

Still, both Obama and Romney are taking swipes at Beijing. Romney says he'd tag China a "currency manipulator" if elected. The Obama administration recently has rolled out a series of restrictive measures against Chinese products and investment.

Neither man wants to look weak on China. And China bashing long has been a staple of American presidential races.

Yet no less an old China hand than Henry Kissinger suggests anti-China rhetoric from both candidates is "extremely deplorable" in such fragile economic times and with leadership in both nations in transition or up for a vote.

A conflict between China and the U.S. would be "a disaster for both countries," says the 89-year old former secretary of state. "It would be impossible to describe what a victory would look like."

In the U.S., opinion polls peg the economy as the No. 1 concern of voters.

Obama implored attendees at a boisterous campus rally in northern Virginia Friday to make sure to vote. "I want to finish the job," he said. Romney and running mate Paul Ryan were campaigning together in Florida.

Obama Turns From Jokes to 'Romnesia' Jab

If for a moment Thursday night, President Obama and Mitt Romney could enjoy a brief respite from an otherwise contentious campaign, by today they had put away their jokes and were back to practicing their jabs.

After an evening spent in white ties and tails at the Al Smith dinner gently ribbing each other, the tone of those jokes today turned much more pointed, as the two men readied for their third and final debate in Florida on Monday.

At an event at George Mason University today, the president was still making jokes, but they carried a punch.

"[Romney is] changing up so much and backtracking and side stepping we've got to name this condition he's going through," said the president.

"I think it's called?'Romnesia,'" he added to cheers and laughter. "I'm not a medical doctor, but I do want to go over some of the symptoms with you because I want to make sure nobody else catches it."

After stumping in Virginia today, the president will spend the weekend at Camp David preparing for the debate.

Romney headed to Boca Raton, site of the debate where he will hold a fundraiser and then begin another round of debate prep.

The debates this year have taken on an outsize importance and as the races tightens the stakes for Monday's faceoff could not be higher. Following their first matchup, Mitt Romney received his most significant bump in the polls all year. And following the second debate, Obama had his best day of fundraising ever, including the 2008 campaign.

"This race is close," said Albert May, a professor of political communication at George Washington University. "Anything that moves the polls a point or two is going to be important."

Joking aside, Monday's debate will focus on foreign policy, an area of expertise on which the president has traditionally polled better.

Last week's debate, however, exposed a chink in the president's record, particularly when it came to his understanding and announcing the causes for the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead.

A new report out today suggests that the CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of the attack that there was evidence that terrorists were behind the assault. Romney has scored points on foreign policy by criticizing the president for not quickly and categorically ascribing the attack to terrorists.

"Of course the debate is important," said a Romney campaign staffer unauthorized to speak for attribution. "Given the president's shifting record on Libya, I imagine it will come up in a debate on foreign policy."

"On Monday, the President will discuss how he's kept his promise to the American people to end the war in Iraq in a responsible way, refocus on al-Qaeda, and put forward a plan to end the war in Afghanistan. In contrast, all that Mitt Romney has offered in blunder and bluster. He said he wouldn't move heaven and earth to get bin Laden. He called Russia, rather than al-Qaeda, our number one foe," said an Obama staffer on background.

"And he has failed to outline a plan to end the war in Afghanistan and even said he would have left tens of thousands of troops in Iraq. We need a President who not only keeps us safe in the world, but also understands the need for steady leadership and keeping us out of endless wars. On these points, Mitt Romney has failed," said the Obama staffer. "This debate might not have as much impact as the first debate, largely because they've tested each other," said May. "It also might not just be about foreign policy, and it won't be just about Libya. They'll talk about Libya, China and Russia. Few elections turn on debates, there haven't been many elections that turn on foreign policy."

According to a comprehensive Gallup study, only two debates between 1960 and 2004 moved the meter and quantifiably changed the direction of the polls and the outcome of the election.

But this year's debates seem to be altering the electoral landscape.

Following the first debate two weeks ago, and a lackluster performance by Obama, Romney saw a sustained bounce in the polls, drawing him close to Obama or putting him ahead of the president nationally, according to a flurry of polls.

The Obama campaign was bolstered today by fresh NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls that found Obama with healthy leads in two key swing states, holding a 51-43 lead over Romney in Iowa and a 51-45 lead in Wisconsin.

The debates matter in another way. President Obama had his best fundraising day ever following last week's debate in New York, according to the AP.

The AP also crunched the numbers to reveal the biggest campaign contributors. Both candidates have big name backers. Hollywood director Jeffrey Katzenberg, Obama's single biggest contributor, gave the campaign $2.5 million. And Sheldon Adelson, who has said he would be willing to give Romney $100 million, cashes in as his biggest supporter with a whopping $34.2 million.
