Record jubilee traffic for Eurotunnel -- to France

The Eurotunnel rail link across the English Channel carried a record number of vehicles during celebrations to mark Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee -- as Britons headed to France on holiday.

Given a four-day weekend to mark the Queen's 60 years on the throne, Britons flocked to France for a vacation, Eurotunnel said.

Some 10,380 vehicles, including cars, caravans and camper vans, and 128 coaches were carried on the undersea rail link on Friday, beating the previous record of 9,382 vehicles on July 26, 2010.

A total of 26,000 vehicles were carried across on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, another record, Eurotunnel said.

"Traffic was also steady in the other direction but the record was not beaten," a Eurotunnel spokeswoman said.

In anticipation of the jubilee and the London Olympics, Eurotunnel on June 6 increased the speed of its trains making the crossing to 160 kilometres per hour (99 miles per hour) from 140 kilometres per hour (87 miles per hour), reducing the crossing time from 35 minutes to 30 minutes and allowing for more traffic.
