How Does Reality TV Impact A Chef's Professional Life?

Amidst the various food- and drink-heavy events at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, there were also opportunities for thoughtful discussions about the food industry. One of these events delved into the hot issue of reality TV, and how winning a food show can affect a chef's professional career and reputation. Moderated by Bobby Flay, the panel included chefs Richard Blais ("Top Chef All-Stars" winner), Marc Forgione ("Next Iron Chef" winner), Jonathan Waxman ("Top Chef Masters" participant), Stephanie Izard ("Top Chef" winner), Geoffrey Zakarian ("Next Iron Chef" winner) and Michael Symon ("Iron Chef").

Flay admitted that he had never moderated a panel before because he was always a panelist. He dove right into it though, and announced, "I don't want this to be a lovefest on what everyone's new projects are." Looks like he's fit for the job, as he sparked a lot of candid discussion.

On growing one's empire:

When Flay asked Michael Symon about Symon's decision to relocate to New York from Cleveland to appear on "The Chew," Symon explained that the program was a once in a lifetime opportunity. He would have never moved to New York without his wife, but she agreed to come with him. Symon said that the hardest part of being a chef is to delegate work. Over the years, as he has continued to open restaurants, Symon has grown comfortable with the team he has put in place. He hasn't worked the line in 13 years, but still remains involved in his restaurants. "The greatest chefs are the greatest teachers," he mused.

Marc Forgione is in the process of opening his second restaurant, and admitted that he has no idea how to run a restaurant without physically being there. "The hardest restaurant you open is your second," explained Symon. At that stage, chefs don't quite have all the cogs in place to keep expanding, and it's impossible for chefs to be in two places at once.

On sponsorships:

Since appearing on "Next Iron Chef," Marc Forgione has inked deals with POM Wonderful and Macy's. Before going on television, he never would have imagined that a company would give him money to drink its product.

Flay advised that when it come to sponsorship, it was really important to know when to say "no." Symon echoed Flay's sentiment. "Be true to yourself."

Waxman cited Wolfgang Puck as an example of a chef that learned how to make a lot of money. "I'm incredibly in awe of Wolfgang Puck," he said.

On future TV plans:

Stephanie Izard has been approached by many production companies to do more TV, but she has been hesitant about filming inside her restaurant. "I'm not going to yell at my dishwasher to make a good episode," she explained.

On TV's effect:

Since going on TV, business at Waxman's restaurant increased 35 percent. Forgione noticed a bump as well but it only goes so far. "TV will make you come once," he said, "but the restaurant will make them come back."

There can be too much of a good thing -- although all the chefs appreciate hearing that a customer loved a dish, sometimes fandom, especially of the TV variety, can go one step too far. Both Waxman and Forgione have had fans chat them up at urinals.

The Contemporary View on Home and Family

You are at : Home | Family Concerns ??? By : Lauren B. ?? zero times read
Submitted 2012-02-24 23:20:01 Home and family involve two concepts that are inseparable in all respects. Although at first glance home and family seem to refer to the physical structure and subjects such as the house for home and the family members for family, these concepts are really in the realm of idea that bind related people together sharing common identity, lineage, experience, and life.

Home refers not only to the structure that provide for shelter. It is primarily the feeling of belongingness, the sharing of affection and care for each other within a certain place or location. Such location is considered a home, whether it is a house, shanty, mansion, or palace, as long as the members feel the love and belongingness with each other and they are able to freely express their real selves and identity, then it is no less than a home for them. On the other hand, the idea of a family is more than the togetherness of persons who share the same bloodline and ancestors. It transcends the mere presence of a mother, father and children.

Family refers to the social and emotional bond that connects individuals, whether related in blood or not, and they share the same love, care, and affection with each other. Although at this point home and family both refers to the emotional, psychological, and social bonds that connects the individuals forming home and family, these concepts are distinguished in this wise; the family always refer to the subjects of the house or the persons that dwell in it while the home generally refers to the structure or residence or it may also connote the emotional and psychological experience of a person to feel the belongingness, togetherness, commonality, love, and affection while being with such people or inside such house.

The divide between this actual or tangible side of home and family from the idea or conceptual realm of the said concepts is manifest among many families nowadays. Most members of the modern families experience the extreme absence of filial or parental care and affection. This is due to the complicated lifestyle that values more on the material aspects and performs most of human activities in a mechanical way.

To illustrate, parents who are into business traveling seem not to worry about being miles away from their children since there is the advancement of communication technology that offers virtual and real time presence such as video chatting on the web and even on mobile phones. However, this development does not suffice the need for the real and actual presence of parents to express their care and affection to their growing children.

Thus, despite all of these technologies, most children do not feel at home while they are in their mansions and they do not feel the presence of their family even when their parents are with them physically. The home and family are concepts that have various ways and means for actualization. They cannot be left to mere physicality or to some abstract ideas, lest, these concepts are nothing but mere thoughts with the least value and significance for the human species.

Finance And Business | Wedding Insurance Budgeting, And How ...

As we continue to enjoy the turmoil generated by the economic downturn, wedding insurance has increasingly become one of those aspects which people have chosen to ignore in order to try to keep the overall cost of the wedding to a minimum.

Planning a wedding is very rarely cheap, and so often couples will be making a number of tough decisions as far as what to buy, what to pay for, and what they can get away with not having. There are some optional extras which have increasingly fallen by the wayside.

Traditionally many couples have purchased bottles of wine and liberally spread them around the tables for the reception, but many couples are cutting back on such generous frivolities, letting their friends and family by their own drinks instead. Having a lavishly tiered wedding cake can certainly look good for the photographs, but having two out of the three tiers made of cardboard is another way in which couples are helping their budget to stretch further.

These and many other examples are certainly viable ways in which couples can help their wedding budget stretch as far as they need it to in order to have a truly memorable and magical day. But choosing to cut out wedding insurance is not cutting out an optional extra.

Granted, as you walk up the aisle, stand up to give a speech, pose for photographs, or tuck into your wedding meal, nobody is going to stand and admire your wedding insurance policy. Nobody will compliment you on your choice of insurance company, there will be no photographs of your policy document, and after the event nobody will be reminiscing happily about the wording of paragraph 3 subsection 2.

But this doesn't in any way mean that a wedding insurance policy should be considered an extra. It is precisely because of the fact that we are still experiencing an economic downturn that it is more critical than ever to make sure you have the cover you need.

Only very recently a major wedding company called Confetti went bust, much to the surprise of many of those within the industry who had seen that company as an established and trusted brand. There is no such thing these days as a completely future proof and reliable service provider, and failing to take out suitable wedding insurance will place you in a very precarious position.

Without suitable cover you will be entirely and completely at the mercy of a dozen or more service suppliers, most of whom you won't have previously had anything to do with, and so won't have any firsthand experience of, and certainly will have no control over.

If they run into financial difficulties, you will have nowhere to turn. You may think that you will at least get your deposit back, or a refund on any money already paid, but it is worth remembering that if a supplier goes bankrupt then you may well be at the very bottom of the list of creditors, and may well receive absolutely nothing. Wedding insurance doesn't have to cost much, but not taking out wedding insurance may very well cost a good deal more.

How to Choose A Trustee - Estate Planning Attorney in Reno, NV

Feb 24, 2012 ?/? By: Bradley B. Anderson, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: probate, Wills and Trusts

When you create a trust, one of the most important decisions you must make is who to appoint to succeed you as your?trustee. Although each trust is unique, there are some basic considerations that you may wish to take into account before making a decision regarding the appointment of a trustee.

  • The Purpose and Complexity of The Trust: Trusts come in numerous forms and are created for a wide variety of reasons. A trust may be rather simple, such as a trust that is created solely for the purpose of providing funds to care for a pet after the death of the maker of the trust. On the other hand, a trust may be extremely complex, such as a trust created to manage and distribute a large estate after the death of the maker. A trust with a simple purpose does not require as much from the trustee as a complex trust does.
  • Location of Trust Assets: The trustee is responsible for all trust assets for the lifetime of the trust. Where the trust assets are located is an important consideration. It is sometimes helpful if the trustee is located near the assets in order to more effectively manage the assets. With today?s?electronic communications, however, this is not as great a factor.
  • Relationship of the Trustee to the Beneficiaries: Does the potential trustee have any financial interest in the trust itself or a direct relationship to the financial interest of a beneficiary? Does the potential trustee have an obvious or potential conflict of interest with any of the beneficiaries? If so, you may wish to reconsider selecting this potential trustee.
  • Financial Ability and Experience: The trustee has numerous duties to both the assets of the trust itself and the beneficiaries. Depending on the size of the trust, managing the trust assets may require a high level of financial ability and experience. Be certain the person you appoint has the experience and the ability to handle the position or to manage the experts who will take care of the technical matters.

PFT: Molk aims to break combine bench record

1987 NFC Divisional Playoff Game - Washington Redskins vs Chicago Bears - January 10, 1988Getty Images

The various concussion-related lawsuits filed in recent months have suddenly taken on a far more serious tone.? According to NBC Chicago, Dave Duerson?s estate has filed a wrongful death action against the NFL.

Duerson committed suicide on February 17, 2011.? The lawsuit claims that, ?[i]f the NFL would have taken the necessary steps to oversee and protect Dave Duerson by warning him of the dangers of head traumas . . . then [he] would not have suffered dangerous repetitive head trauma, would have recovered more rapidly, and would not have sustained permanent damage to his brain which contributed to his death.?

This allegation presumes that the NFL knew or should have known about the dangers of head traumas during Duerson?s career, and that he would have chosen not to play if that information had been shared with him.

?CTE has been a known entity to the NFL for years,? said William Gibbs, who represents the Duerson estate.? ?This degenerative brain disease causes various symptoms ranging from cognitive decline to dementia.?? The NFL?s blatant disregard of the significance of this crisis amongst its retirees is baffling.?

?We have not seen the lawsuit and therefore our attorneys have not had an opportunity to review it,? the league said in a statement forwarded to PFT.? ?Dave Duerson was an outstanding football player and
citizen who made so many positive contributions but unfortunately encountered serious personal challenges later in his life. We sympathize with the Duerson family and continue to be saddened by this tragedy.?

Hundreds of former players have filed suit against the league, claiming that the NFL knew about the long-term dangers of concussions and failed to disclose those risks to players.? The NFL has argued that relief should be pursued through the collective bargaining process, given that players have been represented by a union, the NFL Players Association.

Duerson played from 1983 through 1993, with the Bears, Giants, and Cardinals, winning a pair of Super Bowl rings.? He was one of the named plaintiffs in the Reggie White antitrust lawsuit, and he was a member of the NFLPA Executive Committee.

Last year, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said that Duerson?s death has ?shaken me personally.?? The NFLPA hasn?t said anything about the various and growing concussion lawsuits.? In response to Duerson?s lawsuit, spokesman George Atallah told PFT that the NFLPA has no comment.

Given Duerson?s past role in the NFLPA, one thing to watch going forward is whether the NFLPA will take an affirmative position on the merit of the allegations that the NFL knew about the risks of head injuries and failed to take appropriate action.
